Can you unblur a screenshot?

Sometimes, if the blur is light and the text is short. A solid bar does not have that problem.

Yes, sometimes. Not with a magic “unblur” button on a random website. With contrast, luck, and short text.

In 2016, researchers at PETS showed that mosaic and blur over printed characters can be recovered more often than people expect. The paper is “On the (In)effectiveness of Mosaicing and Blurring as Tools for Document Redaction” by Hill, Saorma, and Saul. An OTP is six digits from a small alphabet. That is the easy case. A paragraph of body copy behind a heavy bar is the hard case.

“Unblur” as a consumer product is usually sharpening, hallucination, or upscaling. Those tools do not prove your redaction failed. They also want the image uploaded. Skip them. Treat recovery as a property of the pixels you left behind, not as a feature someone sold you.

Can a website reverse a Gaussian smear?

Sites that advertise one-click unblur are not running the PETS experiment on your file. They stretch edges, invent plausible detail, or enlarge the frame. A hallucinated digit is not evidence that the original code is still in the PNG. It is a guess dressed as restoration. If the smear was light, a human with a contrast slider may do better than the site. If the smear was heavy over a long sentence, both may fail. Neither outcome is a reason to upload a screenshot that still contains the rest of the chat.

The scientific result is narrower and more useful: mosaicing and blurring, as commonly applied to documents, often leave enough structure that text can come back. That is a warning about the filter, not a license to paste secrets into a restoration demo.

Why six digits come back more often than a paragraph?

Languages have redundancy. Digit codes have almost none, but the character set is tiny. Guessing 000000–999999 with visual hints is a different sport than recovering a paragraph. A stem that still looks like a 1 or a 7 cuts the search. A mosaic cell that still follows the shape of an 8 is a hint. PETS studied printed characters under mosaic and blur, not a promise that every Instagram story can be inverted. The takeaway for screenshots is the same shape of risk: short secrets plus leftover structure.

Bank PANs, recovery codes, and SMS one-time passwords sit in that short bucket. A surname in 11-point UI type can sit there too if the blur is polite. A dense paragraph under a thick fill usually does not. Design the redaction for the short bucket. That is the case you would rotate after a leak.

Does a black rectangle leave anything to invert?

A filled rectangle baked into a raster file replaces samples. There is no residual contrast to stretch unless you left a gap, used a translucent overlay, or saved a format that still holds another layer. A highlighter stroke is not a rectangle. A PDF box drawn over live text is not a rectangle in the screenshot sense either; that is a different file format with a different failure, covered in court reporting on overlay redaction, not in this post.

Start with PNG so the fill is the fill you painted. Chat apps may recompress later. You still do not add a second lossy pass before they do. Compare the filter to the fill in blur vs bar. The paper in one page: PETS 2016.

Should you test redaction by uploading to an “unblur” demo?

No. You would be sending the original secret plus whatever else was in the frame: a name in the header, a URL, a notification. If you need a check, do it locally. Zoom until you cannot read the glyphs. Invert colors in an editor you already have. Raise brightness. If anything returns, the redaction was a tint. Paint again. Export a new file. Send only the export.

People photograph a monitor “to be safe” and then have EXIF from the camera sitting next to a smear that still has digit shape. The smear problem and the metadata problem are separate. Fix both. Do not use a third-party restorer as a unit test.

What should you do instead of hoping the blur is “enough”?

Replace the pixels. Black rectangle, baked into a PNG. Then there is nothing to invert. Crop the chrome if the secret is only in a corner. Recapture if a banner landed on the shot. Rotate the credential if it was ever on a file you are not sure about. The filter is for faces in a crowd when “not identifiable at a glance” is the bar. The rectangle is for anything you would rotate.
