Support queues fill with screenshots that answer the wrong question. The toast is visible, the broken control is sharp, and so is the email in the title bar, the OTP banner that slid in mid-capture, and the sidebar avatar that never belonged in the ticket. Soft smear across the whole PNG does not fix that. It buries the evidence and still leaves digit shapes readable under a light filter.
This is the canonical walkthrough for covering a screenshot before you send it. You choose Blur, Pixelate, or Black bar for the job, mark only what must stay private, download a new PNG, and open that export at full size. Device Markup and Paint remain optional shortcuts when the file already lives on the phone or desktop. The browser path below is the shared stills recipe for BlurThis.
Open larger image in a new tabPick the cover that matches the secret
Redaction fails when the tool and the secret disagree. A six-digit login code needs an opaque fill. A face in a team stand-up shot usually needs glance-level cover, not a solid rectangle that erases the room. Match the method to the risk before you drag.
Black bar is the default for short strings: phone numbers, emails, card digits, OTPs, account IDs, and tokens in the address bar. An opaque rectangle removes glyph shape. A light smear keeps enough outline that someone can guess a digit from spacing alone.
Blur and Pixelate suit faces and messy backgrounds when “not identifiable at a glance” is enough. Pixelate is a different look, not a ranked upgrade at the same strength. Neither is a security guarantee for short digits. If the string is a secret people can type from memory after one peek, use a bar.
Box and Draw are how you place those covers. Box is a rectangle for UI chrome, toast banners, and list rows. Draw closes a freeform loop for a tilted badge, a signature flourish, or hair around a face. Both tools replace pixels in the region you mark. They do not leave a movable sticker on top of the file.
Find faces and Find text suggest boxes when the frame is crowded. Treat suggestions as a first pass. A profile chip, a faint reflection, or a quoted reply in another bubble can still need your own mark. Detection may download a model once, then run in the page. A wait during that step is local work, not a signal that the PNG left the device.
What the frame usually hides
While you focus on the one error that prompted the snip, walk the rest of the chrome. Title-bar emails, sidebar names, notification banners, quoted numbers, autofill dropdowns, and faces of people who are not part of the thread all travel with the file. Cropping an edge is often cleaner than covering it. Pixels that leave the export cannot be reconstructed later.
Inbox list views are a classic trap. You meant one thread, and the list still prints five other subjects. Slack, Teams, and Discord sidebars print workspace names even when the message pane is the story. If the sidebar is not evidence, crop it at capture time. If you already captured, bar the strip as its own region rather than fogging the whole middle of the shot.
Composer previews lie about edge leaks. A letter that sits under the cover at thumbnail scale can peek out when the recipient opens the PNG at full size. Zoom until one character is large. If you can name it, enlarge the region and export again.

BlurThis puts Choose image, Blur, Pixelate, Black bar, Box, Draw, optional detection, and Download PNG in one tab. Open a screenshot from disk or paste it, cover what must stay private, and save a new PNG without creating an account. Editing stays in that tab. Your file is not sent to BlurThis servers for processing. Start on the screenshot blur tool anytime.
PNG export keeps an opaque bar as a flat fill in the downloaded file, so chat recompression starts from a clean cover. Always open the export at full size before you attach it. Prefer sending the download, not a second screenshot of the editor chrome.
How to blur a screenshot in BlurThis
Prefer Black bar for OTPs, phones, emails, and card digits. Use Blur or Pixelate for faces when a soft or blocky cover is enough.
Optional: stay in a built-in editor
Prefer to stay in Photos, Preview, or Paint for a single toast? Use a filled opaque shape over the same secrets, then save a new file. Soft highlighters and light smears are not a substitute for a solid cover on short strings. Full Markup and Paint walkthroughs live on the device guides linked below.
In BlurThis
Choose a file from your device. Editing stays in this tab. A wait while something opens is not an upload.
- Drop the screenshot, tap Choose image, or paste with Ctrl / ⌘ + V.
- Pick Box or Draw. Use Black bar for phones, emails, cards, and OTPs. Use Blur or Pixelate for faces.
- Optional: Find faces or Find text, then tap a suggestion.
- Drag over each private spot with a little padding.
- Tap Download PNG. Send that file, not the original.
Capture habits that save a later bar
The cleanest redaction is the one you never need. Before you press the hardware keys or Win + Shift + S, clear the notification shade, close the sidebar that is not part of the story, and hide balances with the app's own eye icon when it exists. Capture only the pane that proves the bug. A smaller frame means fewer secrets to find later.
If you already captured a wide desktop, crop first when the secret lives only in a corner. Menu bars, taskbars, and account switchers often leave the file entirely with one crop. When the secret sits between two paragraphs you must keep, that is when a bar earns its place. The crop versus bar fork is spelled out in crop versus black bar.
Faces and nameplates follow a different risk model than digits. Soft or blocky cover can be enough for a teammate in the background of a stand-up shot. It is not enough for a PAN or an OTP. When the same frame holds both a face and a code, use two regions and two methods: blur or pixelate the face, bar the code.
Verify before you attach
A covered screenshot is only as good as the file you send. Open the PNG outside the chat composer. Check headers, quotes, and notification shade leftovers. If a digit group still shows spacing, widen the bar. If the error message you needed is under the cover, undo and drag tighter, or crop the chrome first and cover only the secret that remains.
Undo exists so a first drag can be honest. A tidy short bar that clips a descender is worse than a slightly ugly bar that fully covers the ink. Ugly bars are readable as redaction. Pretty gaps leak.
Closing the BlurThis tab drops the working copy from this page. That is not a forensic wipe of your device, cloud backups, or an older copy that already sat in a ticket. Keep the unbarred original off the thread.
