How to blur a screenshot on a Chromebook

By Shaibaz, graphic designer and creator of BlurThis

ChromeOS capture is easy. Blur is not built in. A tab that never uploads the PNG is enough.

Chromebooks will grab the screen in two keys. They will not give you a serious privacy editor after that. Students, teachers, and people on a travel laptop hit the gap every week: the notification shows a tidy thumbnail, Gallery offers a scribble, and the email in the corner is still readable.

This guide is ChromeOS only: Screenshot key and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, where Downloads keeps the file, why Gallery doodles fail, shelf and account-chip leaks, managed school devices, and a Chrome tab that finishes the cover. Cross-device stills method: how to blur a screenshot.

How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook

Google's current Chromebook Help starts with the Screenshot key if your keyboard has one. If it does not, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, or open Screen capture from the time menu in the corner. Then pick full screen, partial, or window. Keyboard-shortcut help still lists Ctrl + Show windows for a full screen and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for a partial rectangle. External keyboards without Show windows can use Ctrl + Shift + F5.

  1. Open only the window you need. Exit split screen if Mail is on the other half.
  2. Press the Screenshot key if you have one, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then choose Screenshot and a mode. You should see a brief flash, then a notification with a thumbnail. Google also notes the capture is copied to the clipboard.
  3. On a tablet or a detached keyboard, use the capture control in the shelf or hold Power and pick Screen capture, then pick full screen, window, or region.
  4. Open Files. Chromebook Help says screenshots save to Downloads unless you changed the folder in the capture menu's Settings. Click the notification if you missed the folder.

Partial capture exists. Use it when the secret is in a corner. Full desktop capture is how you accidentally include Classroom's roster on the other half of split screen. Screen recording is a different button in the same capture menu. This page is stills. A recording of a gradebook is a worse leak than one PNG, because names stay on screen for minutes.

Why Gallery scribble is not redaction

Built-in image editors on ChromeOS can crop and doodle. Scribble is not redaction. A filled black region is. If the gallery tool has a marker with opacity, crank it to solid or stop using it for privacy. Yellow wash over an email is the same class of mistake as a translucent phone highlighter: it looks covered in the notification and fails a contrast check later.

Extensions that promise “blur any page” are a separate risk. They often want to see every site. For one PNG, you do not need that. Edit the file, not the live tab, unless you like leaking the next notification that arrives mid-blur. The ChromeOS camera app is for the webcam, not for redaction. Do not photograph the display with the lid camera as a workaround when screenshot is blocked. That photo adds glare, a bezel, and whatever is on the desk.

Prefer Black bar for student emails, IDs, and short codes. Gallery doodles are not a cover.

Built-in on this Chromebook

Gallery / built-in image edit: use a solid fill if one exists. Crop is valid when the secret is only in the margin. Skip translucent markers.

ChromeOS does not ship a serious Gaussian for screenshots. For blur, pixelate, or several regions, finish in a Chrome tab as below. Do not install a “blur everything” extension for one PNG.

In BlurThis

Chrome is already open. Point a tab at the screenshot blur tool:

  1. Drop the file from Files, or paste from the clipboard if you copied the snip. Confirm it is the snip you meant, not an older clipboard image.
  2. Drag a box. Use Black bar for emails, student IDs, and short codes. Use Blur or Pixelate for a face when glance-level cover is enough. Face covers are not identity-proof.
  3. Tap Download PNG. Attach that download to Classroom or Drive. Do not screenshot the editor to “save” it.

Editing stays in the tab. The file is not sent to BlurThis servers for processing. Closing the tab drops the working copy from the page; that is not a wipe of Downloads or Drive.

Managed school Chromebooks

Sometimes the web filter blocks unknown sites. If BlurThis will not load, use whatever local editor still allows a solid fill. Crop is valid when the secret is only in the margin. If IT blocked downloads, you may only be able to copy into a Google Doc. A drawing over a Doc image can be a layer. Export a flattened PNG if the UI offers it, or you are back to looks covered, isn't.

Managed devices screenshot LMS pages that include other students' emails. Cover the roster. Cover the private comment. Cover the email in the account switcher. Student assignment notes go into that case. Your homework should not publish the class list. Covering a screenshot is not HIPAA or GDPR compliance.

Guest mode and kiosk apps change where the file goes. Guest mode may wipe Downloads when you sign out. Google also notes that files in Downloads can be deleted when the device is low on space. Save the redacted PNG to a USB stick or a permanent folder only after the bars are in place. Do not email the original so you have a backup, then attach the backup by mistake.

Shelf, Bluetooth, split screen, and notifications

The shelf shows open apps. The status area shows the Google account photo, battery, and sometimes a VPN or school Wi-Fi name. Crop it or bar it. Bluetooth device names can be a person's phone. None of that belongs in a PNG you paste into a public forum.

Split screen is the Chromebook specialty leak. Docs on the left, Mail on the right, capture everything. Grab a region. Or bar the half you did not mean to publish. The account picker in the corner lists every signed-in Google account. Close it before you capture. A classroom Chromebook with both a personal Gmail and a school account in that picker is a name plus a district.

Notifications on ChromeOS linger in the corner. Calendar titles name meetings. Chat previews name classmates. Swipe them away, or bar the corner. The longer version of that failure is notifications in screenshots.

Linux apps, Crostini, and capture failures

If you turned on Linux on the Chromebook, a terminal or VS Code window can appear in the same capture as Classroom. Paths in a terminal often include a username. Cover them. Do not assume a Linux screenshot tool you installed is safer than Chrome. It still writes a file. You still have to bar the secret before you upload to Drive. Crostini windows also show a penguin icon or a Linux apps label in the shelf. Harmless. The /home/yourname path in the terminal is not. SSH configs and .pem filenames in a file tree are keys. Cover the path, then share. Internal tokens in a URL belong in hide API keys in the URL bar, even on a Chromebook.

If capture does nothing, search Settings for screenshot. Some managed units disable capture. External keyboards remap Show windows. Try the on-screen capture button from the time menu instead. If the notification vanished, open Files → Downloads and sort by date. If you pasted into Docs and the image looks covered, export a PNG before you turn the Doc into a Classroom attachment. Layers in a Doc are not baked pixels.

Prefer the PNG from the editor download. Uploading that file to Classroom as a compressed JPEG is how a bar grows a halo. Once pixels are replaced in a flattened PNG, later JPEG compression cannot reconstruct the original characters. Weak smear is a different risk.
