Shift-Command-4 already proved you can capture a region. Preview is where people get clever and then leak. A translucent highlighter looks finished on a Retina display. It is still a tint. Recipients who open the PNG elsewhere can stretch contrast until the letters return.
This guide is Mac only: Apple's screenshot shortcuts, where the PNG lands, filled rectangles in Preview Markup, menu-bar chrome, and Safari when you want blur or pixelate. Cross-device stills method: how to blur a screenshot. Sibling device guides are linked at the end.
Mac screenshot shortcuts and where the file goes
Open larger image in a new tab- Entire screen: Shift-Command-3. Apple's help says a PNG lands on the Desktop by default, named Screen Shot plus the date and time.
- Selected area: Shift-Command-4, then drag the crosshair. Esc cancels. Hold Space while dragging to move the selection without resizing it.
- One window: Shift-Command-4, then Space, then click the window. Hold Option while you click to skip the shadow.
- Screenshot toolbar: Shift-Command-5. Timer, pointer, save location, and screen recording live here. Options → Save to moves the default away from the Desktop. On supported Macs running current macOS, Options can also pick SDR PNG or HDR HEIF.
- Copy instead of saving: add Control, for example Control-Shift-Command-4, then paste straight into an editor. No file is written until you paste. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.
MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini all use the same keys; there is no separate laptop shortcut. If Shift-Command-3 does nothing, check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots. If the file is not on the Desktop, the Shift-Command-5 options may point at Documents, Downloads, or Clipboard. iCloud Desktop, if enabled, has already synced the unredacted original, which is one more reason to cover before you share. Local covering is not anonymity.
macOS is good at capturing a region. It is average at pretending to be a redaction suite. You do not need Pixelmator or Photoshop for a Slack snip. You need a filled rectangle, a PNG, and the discipline not to attach the Desktop original sitting next to the covered copy.
Redact a screenshot in Preview
- Open the PNG in Preview (double-click, or File → Open).
- Show the Markup toolbar. Rectangle tool. Fill color black. Line color black so you do not leave a halo.
- Cover the text. Include padding. Zoom with Command + plus.
- Duplicate first if you still need a clean original (File → Duplicate), then export or save the covered copy. Send that file, not both in one zip.
A white rectangle with 40% opacity is a decoration. Anyone can put the file in another editor and crank contrast. Black fill, full opacity. If Markup's rectangle still looks translucent, you picked the wrong fill. Fix it before you drag the file into Messages. Preview's annotate tools include a highlighter. Do not use it as a privacy tool. It is for calling attention to a sentence, which is the opposite of hiding one.
How to blur a screenshot on Mac in BlurThis
Prefer Black bar for OTPs, phones, emails, and tokens in the URL bar. Preview filters are not a privacy product for short strings.
Built-in on this Mac
Preview Markup: rectangle tool, solid black fill, full opacity, padding past letter edges. Duplicate before you save if you still need the clean original. Skip the highlighter.
Photos filters look cinematic and do nothing useful to a 12-point email. For blur or pixelate, finish in Safari as below.
In BlurThis
Open Safari to the screenshot blur tool:
- Drop the Desktop PNG on the canvas, or choose the file, or paste if you captured to the clipboard with Control held.
- Pick Black bar for short secrets, or Blur / Pixelate for faces when glance-level cover is enough.
- Drag each region, zoom to full size, then Download PNG. Drag that file into Slack or Mail. Do not attach the Desktop original beside it.
Editing stays in the tab. The file is not sent to BlurThis servers for processing. Closing the tab drops the working copy from the page; that is not a wipe of Desktop, Downloads, or iCloud.
Menu bar, Stage Manager, and Quick Look traps
VPN city, meeting title, unread badge with a person's name, a Focus mode that implies you are in a clinic. Crop the menu bar or bar it. The longer version of notification leaks is notifications in screenshots.
Stage Manager and multiple spaces make accidental chrome more likely. You meant to grab a dialog. You also grabbed a sliver of Mail. Check the edges at full size before you hit send. Shift-Command-4 already lets you drag a tight rectangle. Use that at capture time when the secret is in a corner.
Spacebar Quick Look is for checking the shot. Markup from Quick Look can still save. Confirm you saved a new file. Confirm Finder is not highlighting the original. People attach from the wrong recents list in the Mail composer all afternoon. The floating thumbnail after capture is a similar trap: Markup it, click Done, then attach the Desktop original anyway because Mail's recents list prefers the larger file.
Grab.app still exists in Applications → Utilities for people who learned Macs before the toolbar. Same rule. Capture, then Preview or a browser canvas. Do not confuse “I selected a window” with “I covered the token in the URL bar of that window.” Some apps, such as Apple TV, may block a screenshot of their window; Apple notes that on the same help page.
Stay on PNG
Open larger image in a new tabStay on PNG for a baked bar. If you export JPEG from Preview, keep quality high, and understand chat apps may crush it anyway. Starting from PNG is still the better habit. Once those pixels are replaced in the flattened file, later JPEG compression cannot reconstruct the original characters. Weak blur, a translucent overlay, or a missed edge is a separate problem. More on why mushy JPEG is a bad redaction container: save as PNG, not a mushy JPEG.
Continuity Camera and iPhone-to-Mac photo imports are a different pipeline. Those files may still carry EXIF if they began life as Camera shots, not as macOS screenshots. A screenshot from Shift-Command-4 is usually a clean PNG on disk. Still send the edited export, not both files in one zip for context. Covering a Mac screenshot is not HIPAA or GDPR compliance.
