The floating thumbnail after Side and Volume Up feels like a privacy editor. Tap it, pick the highlighter, paint a yellow wash over a password, tap Done. On a phone in your hand the letters look gone. On a recipient's Photos edit screen, brightness and brilliance can stretch the remaining contrast until the same digits read again.

Capture keys Apple documents on iPhone
Open larger image in a new tab- Face ID models: press the Side button and Volume Up together, then quickly release.
- Touch ID with a Side button: press Side and Home together, then release.
- Touch ID with a Top button: press Top and Home together, then release.
- AssistiveTouch: Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch, then add Screenshot to the menu when hardware keys are awkward in a case.
- Back Tap: Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap. Double-tap or triple-tap can fire a screenshot, per Apple's Back Tap help.
Hold too long and you get the power-off slider instead of a capture. Press and release together, short. A white flash and a lower-left thumbnail mean it worked. On current iOS the thumbnail offers quick tools; swipe left to dismiss and the file still saves to Photos. Apple's find path is Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots. Recents often shows the same file.
If iCloud Photos is on, the unredacted original syncs as soon as the shot lands. Cover before you share. Local covering in Markup or Safari is not anonymity, and it is not a wipe of iCloud or device backups. Some apps block capture and return a black frame. Do not photograph the glass with a second phone as a workaround; that photo still holds the digits.
Why the Markup highlighter fails as redaction
Highlighter in Markup is often a translucent overlay. It lowers contrast without removing glyph shape. In 2018, 9to5Mac showed that raising brightness and brilliance in Photos could bring the “covered” letters back. Lifehacker later told people to stop using that highlighter as a privacy tool. The control is still in Markup. Landlords, teachers, and group chats still receive those files.

Redact in Markup with a filled shape
- Capture with the keys above, or open an existing shot in Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots.
- Tap Markup. Choose the pen or a shape, not the highlighter.
- Pick a solid color. Black is honest. Draw a fat rectangle until no glyph peeks out, including descenders on g and y, plus a little padding.
- Tap Done, then save a copy. Send that copy from Photos, not a path labeled Share Original.
Shapes → filled square is cleaner than freehand. Zoom with two fingers until one character would be large. Status-bar clocks are rarely the leak. Chat headers, keyboard suggestions, and notification banners that slid in mid-press are. Duplicate the image in Photos first if you still need the unredacted file for yourself.
Markup is fine for arrows and circles on a bug. It is a weak privacy product for short secrets you will send off the phone. Prefer a baked export when the PNG leaves iMessage or WhatsApp.
How to blur a screenshot on iPhone in BlurThis

Markup does not offer a Gaussian you should trust for six-digit codes. For blur, pixelate, or several regions in one pass, finish in Safari as below.

Open the screenshot blur tool in Safari with your shot ready in Photos:
- Tap Choose image and pick the screenshot from the photo picker (one file). Grant access only for that pick.
- Choose Black bar for short strings, or Blur / Pixelate for a face. Drag a box with padding past letter edges.
- Pinch-zoom until you cannot name a character under the cover, then tap Download PNG. Share that file from Files. Do not take a second screenshot of Safari to “save” it.
Editing stays in the Safari tab. The file is not sent to BlurThis servers for processing. Closing the tab drops the working copy from the page; that is not a forensic wipe of Photos or iCloud.
What iPhone chrome usually hides
Chat headers reprint phone numbers. Quoted replies reprint them again. Mail list views name other people beside the one thread you meant to show. The keyboard suggestion strip sometimes reprints the password you just typed, even when the field itself is dots. A notification can slide in while your thumbs are on the buttons. Wait, swipe it away, or bar the banner after capture.
Live Photos and screenshots are different objects. You are editing a still. If you somehow attached a Live Photo of a card or a passport, that is a different mess: extra frames, maybe audio. For a normal screenshot, treat the chrome as hostile until you have checked it at full size.
Phone numbers, emails, OTPs, and card digits deserve an opaque bar, not a light smear. Covering a screenshot is not HIPAA or GDPR compliance. It is a pixel habit before the file travels.
PNG export and what to send
Screenshots on iPhone are usually PNG already. Photos likes HEIC and JPEG for camera shots. For a redacted still you will share in a compressed chat app, a PNG from a canvas editor is the boring safe object. Send the file you downloaded, once. Prefer that download over a second capture of the editor chrome, which reintroduces the tab bar and maybe a download pill.
The same Safari tab works for any still in your library when the job is a face or a house number, not only a system screenshot. For faces specifically, the face tool can suggest a box. Face cover is not identity-proof. Portrait mode only softens background when you take a Camera shot; it does not redact a screenshot you already have.
