Power and Volume down write a PNG. They do not redact one. Google's Android Help still starts with that chord on most phones, then the file lands in Photos, Gallery, or Files depending on the skin. Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and “stock” are not the same app. There is no single Android button labeled Redact.
That is why people think they already blurred it when they drew a scribble with a markup pen. Scribble is not a bar. Mosaic at the lightest setting is not a bar. This page stays on Android: capture paths Google documents, OEM editors, heads-up banners, Gboard strips, and a Chrome tab when you want a baked cover. Cross-device stills live in how to blur a screenshot.
How to take a screenshot on Android
Android Help lists two capture paths. Press Power and Volume down at the same time, then let go. If that does nothing, press and hold Power for a few seconds, then tap Screenshot. On Pixel, Google says the preview sits at the bottom left. Other skins park a toolbar along the bottom with scroll capture, crop, and share. Neither toolbar is a privacy product.
- Open the screen you want. Swipe away heads-up banners first. Wait a second so a new toast does not land mid-press.
- Press Power and Volume down together, then release. You should see a flash or a shrinking animation, plus a preview thumbnail.
- If that chord does nothing, hold Power until the power menu appears, then tap Screenshot. Some OEMs put it there only. Google also says to check the manufacturer's help if neither path works.
- Skip the instant share sheet. Open the file later. On phones with Google Photos, Android Help's path is Photos → Collections → On this device → Screenshots. Gallery skins often use a Screenshots album instead.
Scrolling screenshots (Capture more on Pixel, Scroll capture on many Samsung phones) are useful for a long settings page. Android Help documents Capture more on Android 12 and up. They are also how you accidentally include twenty extra emails below the error. Crop the extra length before you share, or skip scroll capture when the secret is only in one card.
Does Android have a built-in screenshot blur?
Sometimes. Samsung's editor often includes mosaic or a blur sticker. Use the heaviest setting and pinch-zoom until the letters are gone, not artistically smudged. Light mosaic on a six-digit code is decoration. Prefer a solid bar for numbers, emails, and anything you would rotate if it leaked. Pixelate is not universally stronger than blur at the same strength.
Pixel's stock Photos editor is fine for crop, rotate, and markup. It is weak as a privacy product. If you cannot find mosaic after two menus, stop hunting. Use a browser tab. Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Motorola skins keep renaming the same idea: mosaic, pixelate, blur, pen. The test is identical. Pinch until you cannot guess a digit. A filled black rectangle is honest. A pen at low opacity is the Android cousin of a translucent highlighter.

Prefer Black bar for OTPs, phones, and emails. Use the heaviest OEM mosaic only if pinch-zoom shows no readable glyph.
Built-in on this Android phone
OEM Gallery / Photos edit: if mosaic or a solid fill exists, use the heaviest tile size or full-opacity black rectangle. Pinch-zoom until digits are gone. Skip low-opacity pen doodles.
Post-capture toolbars that only offer crop, doodle, and share are not enough for short secrets. Open the file from Gallery later when you can zoom without rushing the share sheet.
In BlurThis
Open Chrome (or the browser your work profile allows) to the screenshot blur tool:
- Tap Choose image. Grant the photo picker for this one file from Downloads, Gallery, or Photos.
- Drag a box. Use Black bar for OTPs, phone numbers, and emails. Use Blur or Pixelate for a face when glance-level cover is enough. Face covers are not identity-proof.
- Tap Download PNG. Share from Downloads or Files. Do not take a second screenshot of the browser.
Editing stays in the tab. The file is not sent to BlurThis servers for processing. Closing the tab drops the working copy from the page; that is not a forensic wipe of Gallery.
Notifications, keyboards, and nav chrome
Android loves a heads-up banner while you hold Power and Volume down. Wait. Swipe it away. Or bar the top of the image if you already captured. Message previews name people. Calendar toasts name meetings. The pane you meant to share can be clean and the banner still ruins it.
Gboard and other keyboards show suggestion strips. Those strips sometimes reprint the password you just typed, even when the field is dotted. Cover the strip. Cover the field if any character is still visible. Cover the app's show-password eye if you left it on for yourself.
Gesture navigation puts a thin handle at the bottom. Three-button nav puts Back, Home, and Recents. Full-screen capture includes them. Crop them if the PNG is going into a public bug tracker. Quick Settings tiles that peek from a failed swipe-down can show a VPN city or a work Wi-Fi name. Bar that chip.
Chat headers and work profile traps
WhatsApp, Telegram, and Messages put the number or name in the header. Barring one bubble does nothing if the header still prints the digits. Quoted replies duplicate the same line. Group names can identify a school or a clinic. Cover more than the joke. If the secret is a phone number or email, how to hide a phone number or email goes deeper on short strings.
A screenshot from a work profile can include a company VPN city, a managed email, or an internal URL. Some devices keep work screenshots in a separate album. Check which album you attached. Managed devices sometimes watermark every capture with an email. That watermark is the point of the policy. Do not crop it off to look cleaner if your admin required it. Do still bar the customer's phone in the ticket you are escalating. Covering a screenshot is not HIPAA or GDPR compliance.
File names can leak too. A timestamp filename is mostly a clock. A name like salary-review plus a person is not. Rename before you upload to a ticket system if the name is the secret. Work profile Chrome may block unknown sites. If the editor will not load, use the OEM gallery's solid fill, or crop until only the error remains.
When capture fails, and PNG versus JPEG
Hold the Power and Volume pair shorter. A long hold is the power menu or Google Assistant, depending on the skin. Try the power-menu Screenshot button. On Pixel, Settings → System → Gestures sometimes includes a screenshot chord. Samsung's Palm swipe to capture is easy to trigger by accident and easy to miss when you meant to use it. If banking apps give you a black frame, that is a capture block. Do not photograph the glass with a second phone.
Open larger image in a new tabExport PNG when the editor offers it. Many galleries default to JPEG. A bar on a heavily compressed JPEG can ring. Once pixels are replaced in a flattened PNG, later JPEG compression cannot reconstruct the original characters. Weak blur, a translucent overlay, or a missed edge is a separate problem. Format notes: PNG versus JPEG.
